Real tent camping hasn't been a major family activity for us...we do it now and then with family and friends, but this is the first time in a long time I booked a reservation for just us.
I grew up going to Leo Carrillo with family, friends, and with other families. It's a great little beach camping spot (actually, dirt camping, beach across the street) in Malibu with the coolest little tidepools and cove, rocks to climb, and scenery. Labor Day Weekend we took the kiddos and had our little adventure.
We saw families of starfish, big crabs, did everything 'camping style' and loved it. I got 7 thumbs up for the camp food we prepared... it was truly YUM! I only wish we'd been able to stay and take some more school off. The prep that goes into a trip like that really warrants at least 4 nights of camping even if we have to fight with spiders, winds that stir the dirt up our noses and spray a layer of yuck over everything, pests that eat our muffins and ants. At least we had flushing toilets and running water.
The only downside wasn't for us, but for the groups surrounding us because they had to listen to LOUD children. I mean, OUR loud children. We're really loud. I had to apologize ahead of time just so we didn't get the looks if Vivs decided to scream at the top of her lungs or if Monson and Kenz antagonized Izzie, who is just as loud.
We've decided that it would be a great investment to buy an old clunker RV and spiff it out so that we can have some comfort and a little more cleanliness while enjoying the outdoors. Why would we want that? Vivs won, hands down for kid who can get dirt into every crevice including up her nose in the form of dirt boogers for DAYS after. They just kept on a'comin!
Anyone care to come along and be our camping buds next time?

Great photos!!! Looks like great fun. I know our family would LOVE Leo and would definitely add to the noise factor. Maybe someday we'll join you!
I would love to! I miss the beach. Remember my surprise party at Leo? I only just now remembered that, you probably remember more of the details...you could fill me in! I just don't remember things very well these days. Looks like you had a great time. There's just something about camping and kids. They have so much fun that it makes all the dirt worth it!
Leo is our beach! Durning the winter months we head down there when the tide is low and find all sorts of creatures! It is just soooo beautiful. We have never camped, just day trips! Jane was inked by a squid one time, never came out of her suit! Give us a call next time your headed to a beach our way!
Glad to see that your kids finally have learn how to dig a real beach chair in the sand! The BEST. I miss the beach!! - well really I miss the ocean, I have plenty of sand around here, no water...... You LUCKY dogs!
Pick me! Pick Me! I wanna go!!!
We love Leo. May 22, 1993 Pie and I got engaged there. So beeeyootiful.
Good for you for camping. I'm not quite there yet.
Every child needs memories of camping at Leo Carrillo! Do you think it was this much work for our parents? I just remember the fun... So how did you get everything to the beach? I remember it being a REALLY long walk and I have trouble now getting from the parking lot to the sand with the wagon, umbrellas, coolers, etc. Let me know when you plan to go again, we might be up for it...
We LOVE Leo!! What a fantastic beach to camp at. Looks like a great time!
Camping at Leo really is dirty - I love camping, in an RV at a grassy park like the one we did at last years Family Reunion.
