The Bad News Bears...is not how it ended

...We didn't get our happy winning season! Basketball is over!  Hip Hip Hooray!  McKenzie & Monson proudly wore their "Jazz" uniform and no one could be happier than me that the season has come to an end.
Their team struggled....MORE than struggled as they ended up winning only 2 of their 15 games.  The team with the worst record in the league even beat us during the last game!  But I say...hooray, because now we don't have to deal with playoffs.  Although I think McKenzie improved overall and Monson became even more aggressive, if that's possible.  I officially have more respect for the other fellow team moms out there after this basketball season. We're officially done with sports, dance, and piano until WAMU helps us decide if we're staying or leaving...
So I need tips from you photog gurus...why are my pictures so retarded with my VR lens shooting in sport mode?  Should I have been shooting in burst continuous mode so the motion wasn't caught to blur out my shots?  Still a novice....

So cute in those uniforms! Sorry they had a hard season, but so glad they stuck with it!

That is how it all started for my Mackynzie! Watch out your weekends will be filled with basketball for years to come. It helped that Mckenzie and Monson were on the same team. Corky Smith has a fun program. I love how they have the girls play coed. It really helps them get aggressive.

Maybe you should hang a basketball hoop at the bottom of the stairs so as the kids slide down they can also practice their shots! (giggle)

I love Basketball - win or lose, it's just FUN

How fun that they got to be on the same team. Nice consolidating, Shay!

Your problem with the photos is the lack of light indoors. For example, the shot of McKenzie from the side was shot at ISO-800 at 1/15 sec shutter speed and F/4 aperture.

At that shutter speed, you're going to get motion blur from most human subjects, sometimes even in a portrait setting. The VR only compensates for camera shake at those slow shutter speeds, not the subject motion.

What you need to do is figure out a way to speed up that shutter, at least to 1/30 and preferably to 1/60 or more.

My guess is that lens is wide open at F/4 so you can't get any more light through the lens. Faster lenses that can do F/2 or better usually cost a ton. That leaves increasing the sensor sensitivity (the ISO setting).

The Sport setting probably limits the camera to ISO-800 so you're going to have to go to the manual settings. I'd try Aperture priority and set it to F/4 and set the sensitivity to ISO-1600 or even ISO-3200 if it's not too grainy.

In aperture priority, the camera will decide on the best shutter speed. In the photo we're talking about, that would have been 1/30 or 1/60 sec respectively.

You might need to change the focus settings to. Canon has a setting that will continuously auto-focus and I'm pretty sure Nikon does to. It's usually enabled in the Sports setting but you'll have to manually set it when you're in aperture priority or any other non-automatic setting.

Graham played for the 1st time this year and I think touche the ball once. I really liked him playing (so much running!) that we will sign him up again after more practice this spring and summer. But it is a time thing to take these kids to play, isn't it? We love it if the boys love it so we go. Basketball and Soccer are the house favorites but I'm signing my boys up for tennis too - a must for any kids with CA heritage!
