This was our first Del Mar Fair experience. We made the 'mistake' of stopping at IN-N-OUT before going (I had free coupons) as the fair food choices just never ended. My point of reference was the Utah County Fair...more like a backyard BBQ than the big kahuna here in San Diego. I'm secretly kind of glad we already ate beforehand because not only would it have cost a small fortune to feed our family there with price gouging, but we all would have chosen to eat funnel cakes and deep fried snickers as our main course.
We did try the deep friend snickers, which isn't worth the hype in my opinion. We paid six bucks for a bag of sugar in the form of cotton candy, and dropped 10 bucks on a bag of kettle corn. Our dear neighbor, who had a booth at the fair, gave us tickets to get in, so it did save us $60 on entrance fees. The big momma turkey leg though was to die for. Who would have thunk it?! Yup, $11 for that too. I ended up coming away with chamois rags, a beach bag on wheels, and 'as seen on TV OxyCleanWash ball and dryer balls...probably all hype, but the concept sounded good.
We dropped $30 in one ride a piece for the kids...$9 for parking and a couple hours of fun. I'm feeling a little 'taken' by the hype of the fair, so how great it was to get in for free (I'm sounding like a cheap Mormon...usually I'm not!) It was fun family afternoon...glad it's just once a year not only cause fair food isn't on my diet, but because money doesn't grow on trees and sometimes it's hard to just say 'no.' All in the name of family fun.

The fair can definitely get pricey! It's good memories though!
It looks like the kids had a lot of fun at least. The other day Brett & I went to this new place by us called Liberty Land and rode a tiny rollercoaster for $9. Gotta love feeling ripped off left and right, huh? You should start charging for your front-yard carnivals ;)
Fairs are a lot of fun, but a huge rip-off! It is always the food that gets me too. If you want a super yummy turkey leg, you should go to Disney! They are Matt's fav and only cost about $6!
It's true that it does get hyped up a lot more than it is worth- more so if you're not from around here. But truly it is tradition for us! I will probably always go at least once each year. And the deep-fried is my must have!! Next time try the deep-fried oreos, pretty good!
All that fried food sounds heavenly. But Cali is soooo overpriced! Having just been there, if we all stick together and refuse to pay so much, prices would HAVE to go down. Supply and demand.
But you are good parents to take your kids. They looked like they had a great time.
We did that a couple of years ago with the Parrys. Between the price of the fair/food and almost "losing" Hailey on one of the rides...I don't think I'll ever go back!!!
Looks like you guys had fun though!
So glad you're home.
