Growing up, my mom and I used to consume these heavenly gourmet dark chocolate truffle bars from Trader Joes...more than any person should be allowed. I don't remember what they were called, other than our special term for them, "boobie bars." They were our version of 'happy pills' and just put an instant smile on our faces and instantly satisfied our senses.
My brother, Mark, reminded me that we would hoard these amazing chocolate bars. We'd buy them by the case and the way we'd get the boys to leave our 'medicine' alone was by telling them that if they ate them they'd most certainly grow boobies. I actually think they believed us for a time...and left us to our own devices. Oh, I can just taste the truffle filling surrounded by the extra dark chocolate sitting here reminiscing. Trader Joes no longer carries them which is probably a good thing for my hips these days.
Dieting or not, at a certain time every month I find myself HAVING to indulge...I really can't help it no matter how hard I try. Since I've tried to keep my cupboards clear of my weaknesses, I had to send Curt out for a quick ice cream run tonight (the next best thing to quality dark chocolate). I needed my medicine in some form! He brought back Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Chunk and Half Baked...YUM. Lexie asked for a bite and I told her, "you probably won't like it...you'll grow boobies." It affected her the same way at first--she wouldn't take a bite afraid what she may wake up to! Izzie...well, a spoon full wasn't enough for her...she went and got her own spoon to dig in. And after Lex saw Izzie's boldness she had to get in on the action.
So there you have it...if you don't want your kids to eat your 'medicine' just tell them they'll grow boobies and see if that works. Maybe it's just a boy thing. Looks like I'll have to share my medicine with four other girls who need the medicine too...but I don't mind...it just means less for my hips!

All I can say is there must have been some truth to the "boobie" joke! I think I got slipped some too growing up!
Shay, do you remember once when our stash of bars started disappearing faster than we were consuming them? (I know hard to believe we weren't eating them FAST enough.) That's when we told your brothers that they were just for girls and if boys ate them they'd grow boobies. Kevin, probably in kindergarten at the time, pulled out the neck of his tee shirt and quickly inspected his chest - WE found out who had discovered our hiding place!
I still have dreams of letting a bite of the truffle bar slowly melt in my mouth and coat my throat with sheer pleasure!!! The bars were imported from Canada and had been rated the #1 truffle bar in Canada - too bad you didn't look for them on your "run" over the boarder. I made some that ALMOST were as good - but only for one day - they dried out too fast and I didn't have anyone to share them with who really appreciates a fine dark chocolate truffle.
We started eating the rolled up wafer cookies from Trader Joe's that were coated with a layer of chocolate inside - yet were still hollow. We figured that they certainly couldn't have ANY calories since they were mainly a hole or tube - yes, we justified our cravings telling ourselves they were "O's" - translation - zero calories!!!!
This post made me seriously hungry...and not for cereal this morning. Chocolate chip cookies anyone??? (My hips don't need it either!)
I love this post...too funny! I should have gone to your house to get my chocolate fix. My mom doesn't like chocolate, so she'd buy peeps, licorice and circus peanuts(do you remember those?). I don't really like any of those so I suffered...alone. What a fun memory you and your mom share! Please send her my best. Now I'm going to see if I can find some chocolate-- for breakfast ;)
We've been away from the web for a few days enjoying conference with the family... all but Brian and Maren (work got in the way) AND Judy Moore. I never had any of those chocolates from TJ. I guess that's a good thing. I'd still be wearing them. Your "good" parts of the trip sounded great. Glad you are all home safe and sound
Ice cream is my medicine of choice too. I like the B&J peanut butter cup....yum!!
I survive on chocolate fixes too. Those truffle bars sound so tasty.
I loved this post. Your mom has told me about these chocolate bars before. I asked Matt if he remembered them, and told me that he didn't. My fix is ice cream with chocolate!
I looked for the bars too at Trader Joes when we first got to Arizona. Their peanut butter cups and gourmet licorice are pretty tasty thought.
I guess my chest is larger than it should be...
