Trade Vivie for a dog or cat?

These pictures are from July '06 --Lexie's grown SO much since then! (It makes me sad!) But she still won't let me forget...

For the last 3 days Lexie and I have had this same conversation:

L- "Mom, why do we have to have a baby?"
me- What do you mean, Lexie, you don't want Viviana???
L- "No, I mean why can't we have a dog and a cat instead?"
me- And what do you want to do with Vivie?
L- "Well, I guess we can keep her and then get a dog and a cat too."
me- Lexie, we already had a dog in Utah and it ruined our yard and the big kids didn't take care of him.
L- "Well, then let's get a cat."
me- Cat's are smelly and leave hair all over.
L- "Oh. Well, I really want a dog or a cat. We're supposed to give loves to animals. Jesus said."

day 2
same as day 1 pretty much

day 3
She obviously has been thinking about this non-stop. Maybe they read a book at school about pets or something and poor Lex was the only little pre-schooler with no pet??? Just a hunch.

L- "Mom, okay, let's keep Viviana and get a dog. We can build a house for the dog inside the family room so it doesn't mess up the yard. "(me, laughing inside at her simple ingenuity). She thought a little longer..."or, let's take the trampoline out and build a dog house there so it has a place to sleep and stay. How 'bout that, mom? And then it won't mess up our yard!"

me- Lexie, how about a rabbit instead, with a cage?
L- "Well, can we love and hold the rabbit?
me- Yes, Lex, we can hold the rabbit and give it loves. I thought some more...Lexie, how about a fish?
L- "And can I hold and pet the fish?"
me- No, can't do that or it will die.
L- "I really just want a dog and a cat."

This little 3 year old REALLY wants a dog...or a cat. This mommie REALLY doesn't. I don't like indoor pets and the cat/dog hair is too much for me with Vivie. There's coyotes here too so a cat can't exactly live outside...what do you all think???? I'm thinking a rabbit would be better...or a fish. Or how about we call it good with Vivie! And they can visit dogs and cats at other people's homes. I know, I know, I just can't bear the thought of taking care of yet another living creature!

Poor Lex! I can tell you that rabbits STINK, so you'd definitely have to keep it in your garage if you went for one. Maybe a hamster? We always had tons of pets of all kinds growing up, but I'm definitely with you on having ZILCH desire for a pet!

No pets for me. Danny really loves dogs and I know that he wants the kids to have one someday, but I'm holding off as long as possible. It doesn't help that I'm allergic to most animals. Besides, I just could really care less about them.

I have the solution - I'm going to send her a soft, cuddly stuffed dog! Won't mess up the back yard, can sleep with her and she can pull it around on a leash.

Take her to somebodies home who has a dog and have her clean up the fresh poop - instant cure to her wanting a dog - her gag reflex will kick in. I know - tough love!!!

You sure changed your tune, I could have sworn you were thinking of getting a Cat for Christmas! Your poor deprived kids! J/K My vote is for the rabbit.

Rach--that was 2 years ago Christmas pre-Vivie. Maybe she can just visit your cat! Mom--She already has a stuffed cat and dog..but not enough for this 3 yr. old! Maybe a hamster since rabbits stink. We'll see.

What a sweetie! At least she agreed to keeping Viviana! And I agree about the cat situation.

Hamsters don't smell the best either! I had a rabbit when I was younger and it was so mean. I vote no on the rabbit. I am a huge animal lover, but I'm not quite sure I would have chosen to have a dog with kids so young. Gibbs came with Matt, but the poor girl is so neglected compared to before Mattie arrived. There are small dogs that do not shed and are fun to hold on your lap! My sister has a mini dachshund(wiener dog) and Mattie loves to play with him and hold him in her lap. Just a thought!

Tell her what I tell my kids...maybe when I am done with changing poopie diapers I might have the energy to clean up after a dog. I think that's fair. I have a beta fish that Camryn got almost two years ago on my kitchen counter that I would love to get rid of...I keep trying to feed it extra so it dies. I keep trying to give it away but no one wants it. To bad you don't live closer. Two years...who knew it would live so long!!!

I know what you mean! We don't want any pets indoors that shed hair either. Gavin talks about how he wants a pet. We've had two beta fish that lasted 4 or 5 months each. I think when we own and not rent then we may get a bird. My paternal grandparents had six kids and they just had a rule that there were no pets. So they all grew up and got them when they got married! I would love to learn how you make such beautiful blogs. :)

Okay...I definitely vote for NO CATS! A cute little doggie maybe..but don't you have enough to take care of? A hamster was a great compromise for us and she DOESN'T stink! She just gets out of her cage and makes hamster tracks all over my house :)

I HAVE a rabbit. She lives outside and hops around all day. Since she is outside, she doesn't stink. VERY low maintenance, however, she has practically ruined our lemon tree by eating off the bark. I'm voting for hamster.

JUST SAY NO! I made the mistake of getting a dog and now we're stuck with hime for the 15-20 years dogs live. He's a dachsund and really not too bad with the kids but he barks all the time and punishes us occasionally by peeing on our beds. He doesn't like my nephew Jacob and bites hime when he is here. He also has anal gland issues and wipes his butt on my floor. Cat's stink and shed and can have serious attitudes. Serra wants a cat and I told her when she moves out on her own she can have one. My family also knows that as soon as the dog dies...THAT'S IT! We will never have another pet. They tie you down when you want to go somewhere and they are one extra thing to clean up after. Can you tell I have an opinion about this?

Reading all these comments reassures me to stick my ground with the NO PET thing. But I know Lexie's little eyes and oh she is a charmer. Hard to say no to that sweet face. How about I get her a cat for her Birthday...then you would be stuck..hee hee hee. I crack myself up.
